SCANDAL
The Second World Festival of Circus Art in Moscow

JURY STAFF Of the 2nd World Festival of Circus Arts in Moscow

Zapashny Mstislav Mikhaylovich – chairman of the jury
In 1977, Mstislav Zapashny presented a unique circus trick ‘Elephants and Tigers’ where the bitterest enemies of the jungles met in the same cage. “In my tricks I proved that a tiger is able to think’, he said. The elephant and the tiger were ‘shaking’ hands, the elephant steps over the tiger…” Born in a circus family, Mstislav Mikhaylovich has been working in circus during 60 years. Nowadays he combines the positions of the panel member of the Agency for Culture and Cinematography and, as the often call it, the position of the ‘Circus Minister’, or the head of the Russian State Circus Company. Zapashny is People’s Artist of USSR and Russia, the winner of ‘The Best Animal Trainer Cup”. He was also honored with the order of the IV degree ‘For Distinguished Services for the Motherland’.

Andrew Guild
During its short history, Australia has had time to build up a “circus country’ reputation. The well-known Edgley International Company began its work in the 20-s of the XX century, when Erick Edgley decided to step into the entertainment business. He was so successful that today the standing director Michael Edgley can hardly remember the exact date of the company foundation. One is clear: Edgley gained the leading position in the sphere of circus entertainments and deal not only with circus rings, but with stage projects, too.

Istvan Kristof
Istvan Kristof is the director of the Hungarian National Circus in Budapest, as well as the director of an International Circus Festival in his country. Furthermore, he is the member of the National Academy of Circus Arts, and in 2004, Mr. Kristof was given the reward of the Nikulin Circus in Moscow.

Ewa Zalewska
An aerial acrobat in the past, now Ewa Zalewska is the director of a circus tent ‘Zalewski’. In addition, for 10 years she has also been standing the general organizer and the artistic director of the International Festival of Circus Art in Warsaw. Which is remarkable, every single Festival is being held without any sponsors, but only on Ms. Zalewska’s income. Ewa is a great fan of ‘Tossed up Boards’, which is a typically Russian circus trick.

Golovko Vilen
People’s artist of the USSR and Russia, honoured art worker of Russian Federation, Vilen Vasilyevich is the chief producer of the Russian State Circus Company. Moreover, he was the scriptwriter of the inauguration of the XXII Olympic Games in Moscow. ‘I saw on TV how the birds were hooked into the webs, and how they desperately tossed about in it. Then I met poet Rassul Gamzatov; I realized that his lyrics to a famous song are exactly what I lacked for my aerial trick’. That’s how the acrobat flight «Sweeps» was created, and from year to year this trick continues to strike with its beauty and sorrow.

Lin Jian
Mr. Lin Juan is the permanent vice-president and the general secretary of the All-Chinese Association of Circus Artists. Mr. Jian has been working in circus industry since 1987. Since then, he gained respect general respect for his ability help circus out to overcome difficult economical problems, yet emphasizing its artictic part. On his own initiative, two international circus forums in Beijing were being held, not counting numerous scientific seminars.

Valentina Mikhailovna Savina - director of the Russian State Rumyantsev-Karandash College of Circus and Pop Arts
Rumyantsev-Karandash College of Circus and Pop Arts was founded in 1927. Valentina Savina, Honoured Culture worker of the RF, has been leading the school for the last 10 years. Almost every single certified circus artist has graduated from this school. Not only Russian, but also ex-USSR and foreign countries (Egypt, Bulgariam Mongolia, Hungary, etc.) have students studying in the College of Circus and Pop Arts. Graduates of this school get a set of unique skills, including special theatre arts. Secondly, Rumyantsev-Karandash College is the only circus school that has its own circus ring. And finally, that’s not a university for ‘random’ people: a large entry is an evidence of the opposite.

Julio Montiko
Julio Montiko is the general director of the cultural foundation that bears his name, as well as he is the director of the International Children Circus Festival in Latina. For the last 7 years this Festival has a great success among the viewers and has become one of the main cultural happenings of the country.

Urse Piltz is the artistic director of the International Circus Festival in Monte Carlo, the main holiday of the circus world. Since 1976, this Fetival combines the best circus shows into one incredible programme. Princess Stefanie is one of the jury members. Soviet and Russian circus artists have taken Golden and Silver Clown awards, and this happened fairly frequently.

Mansoor Al Nabhani - Director of External Relations Department, Municipality Muscat
During last 8 years, when organizing annual National festival in Muscat, Mansoor Al Nabhani invites Russian circus artists who are extremely popular here. One should empasize that Oman is the only Arabic country that dared to take responsibility and invite ‘Circus On Ice’ and ‘Water Circus’. Bringing polar bears to hot climate (not mentioning 70 tons of props) is not only expensive but quite risky. Chartered flight specially for the Russian State Circus Company, a brand-new building to keep the bears in cold - that’s not even the full list of what Mansoor Al Nabhani done hosting the group of Russian artists.

And Barnum & Bailey’ and ‘Disney On Ice’ shows. ‘Feld’ has been in Rosgoscirk’s partner for last 25 years. During that time A lot of Soviet and Russian artists have performed on the ‘Feld’ triple circus ring.

"I’ve tried out evry single genre in circus, beginning with rope-walking and finishing with trapeze; but I like Illusion shows most of all, Conny Porod admits. Mr. Por in 1980. During last 20 years they successfully work with drama and circus artists. Conny Porod is not just a middleman between the performer and the tour organizers; he actually directs huge performances.
